Although the process of acceptance of virtual reality is still growing, the appearance of COVID-19 has drastically accelerated the use of this technology, and allowed the creation of various immersive experiences that include images, videos, sounds, and avatars of third parties. This workshop will look at the possibilities of Mozilla Hubs, the features that the platform offers to foster virtual encounters, its limitations, and everything that is required to generate a virtual environment.

Alfonso Hernández presented some of the achievements of the company Atypic Labs, which creates experiences enriched by technology, design and creativity, by combining touch, movement, narrative and ritual. The Atypic Labs team seeks to generate meaning and reflection as well as promote exchange and connections between individuals. The two sessions of this activity allowed participants to familiarize themselves with original projects and to take part in a collective creation experience via the Agora platform. On the agenda: gamification, shared experience, symbolism of place, live performance, interaction between performers, machine assistance, collaborative theater, community experience, comfort and discomfort zones in an immersive environment.

The workshop was developed around the concept of digital collage, mixing visuals, sounds and code. During the sessions, two programming languages for artists were reviewed.

Session 1

Presentation of the Estuary platform and introduction to CineCer0 for live playback and editing of video files, still images and text for the web. At the end of the workshop, there was a group activity on the https://estuary.mcmaster.ca/ platform, a networked performance platform.

Session 2

Live coding + E-lit, creative possibilities of code. During the first half hour, Mario Guzman presented his work with code. Artist Kofi Oduro used the remaining time for his presentation. In his online workshop, participants saw how code can be used in the musical, performative and literary arts. Using tools such as livecodingYoutube, Hydra, Inverse.website and Sonic Pi to name a few. They saw how expressive and creative code is, while having the benefit of testing how it can be used in a collaborative setting. Participants found that writing and improvising code can lead to varied outcomes musically, as well as using networked elements to their advantage when writing or producing work.

What do these urban places we usually frequent hide? Can we unveil them through reflection? Let’s rediscover the city, but by listening to it. The concept of soundscape was coined by Murray Schaffer in the late 1960s, and defined as the whole of everything that emits sound and surrounds us. In this workshop we will learn to listen, understand, discuss and explore the expressive potential of urban soundscapes, their relationship to heritage, cultural practices and traditions, opening the doors to field recording, which is now possible from almost any mobile device.

The collage technique allows us to break away from the rigidity, limitations and restrictions imposed by traditional methods of image making. It invites us to experiment with visual language through already constructed images, to create and recreate their narratives, meanings and interpretations. It is also a way to stimulate the spontaneity of the process, to transform the tools and to look for our own way to find our own language of expression. In this workshop, we approach this technique by discussing references, techniques, materials, repertoires and narrative constructions, seeking to have each participant find an approach to their own visual language from texts or literary compositions.

Performance and Digital Literature

In recent years, reflections and readings of the body, coming from different fields and areas of study, show that there is an infinite field of generative possibilities that we ourselves do not recognize. Being able to reflect together on the relationship between the body and digital literature allows us to visualize them, from a wide panorama of references, in order to produce much more collaborative and enriching projects.
