Poetic walks | My words, my neighborhood

Starting September 2, 2021, TOPO gave new momentum to the project. Mes mots, mon quartier by offering poetic walks in Old Rosemont with the street theater troupe Toxique Trottoir.

Drawing on the website's repertoire of anecdotes and poetic phrases mesmots.caToxique Trottoir led five poetic walks, bringing to life the stories gathered during the cultural outreach project. Mes mots, mon quartier, conducted in 2019-2020 by TOPO – Digital Creation Center, with artist Caroline Barber and interactive designer Yannick Guéguen.

Like street advertisers, actresses Dominique Marier and Muriel de Zangroniz will wander around the neighborhood and share the gossip they have gathered with anyone who is willing to listen. Funny, sometimes bizarre, and even mysterious, these acted-out anecdotes will allow the audience to discover their neighborhood in a new light.

Halfway between theater, clowning, and poetry, the actresses will leave poetic traces of their passage on the corners of sidewalks along their route.

Mes mots, mon quartier, a collective adventure

Under the artistic direction of the poetess Caroline BarberWe collected words and anecdotes associated with specific locations in the area, then created poetic sentences using the words gathered via our word boxes and during creative workshops at four partner locations: the Rosemont Library, L'Oasis des enfants, Accès-Cible, and the Petite Côte Community Center.

These fun and creative meetings resulted in the collection of nearly 300 words associated with anecdotes that can be found on the website. mesmots.ca, created with the interactive designer Yannick Guéguen. You can visit this site on your computer, but also while walking around the neighborhood with your cell phone, offering an unusual way to see the streets, alleys, and other places steeped in local history.

The participation of Toxique Trottoir marks a new milestone in the project's evolution. This street theater troupe was a finalist for the Grand Prix du Conseil des arts de Montréal in 2020.

Participate in the Virtual Word Box

Interrupted in winter 2020 by the Great Lockdown, the collection of words and anecdotes continues with the Virtual Word Box. Click on the PARTICIPATE button on the website. mesmots.caWrite an anecdote related to your neighborhood, area of residence, or living environment, choose a word related to that anecdote, specify the address or exact location of your anecdote, and then have fun with the poetry creation app Mes Mots, Mon Poème. It's easy and fun!

Toxique Trottoir

Toxique Trottoir creates artistic projects in public spaces that contribute to the development of a more inclusive society. Founded in 2004, this women's company engages artists, citizens, and public spaces in a process of unusual encounters and dialogues. An encounter that combines theater, clowning, and poetry transforms our relationship with everyday life, the city, and representation. Through an original relationship with the public based on interactivity and the involvement of spect-actors, Toxique Trottoir creates for everyone, promoting social, intercultural, and intergenerational diversity.

Caroline Barber

The literature of Oulipo, the cut-up words of Dada and the exquisite corpses of Surrealism are Caroline Barber's favorite playgrounds. These literary devices place words at the heart of her creative practice. Words serve as vehicles of the imagination, graphic images and echoes in the material, just as they do in her work as an everyday empoetineuse.

She has been offering literary workshops in Montreal schools and libraries for over ten years, and participates in the Blue Metropolis Children's Festival and Fenêtres qui parlent. Her fifth children's album, Le vol, has just been published by Les 400 coups.
