The Web Is Elsewhere!

In April 2013, Agence TOPO launched its publication “Le Web est ailleurs ! – Agence TOPO 2008 / 2013” (The Web is Elsewhere! – Agence TOPO 2008 / 2013), which traces its journey over the last five years through a collection of web creations and media performances.

At the beginning of the publication, author and artist Élène Tremblay outlines the territory explored by Agence TOPO since 2008. The desire to engage with the web in new ways and the need to move beyond the screen have led to a shift in the presentation of works to other meeting spaces. With its series of performances Sortir de l’écran / Spoken Screen, Agence TOPO highlights the importance of creation in relation to digital arts, words, and poetry, with a focus on social engagement and the exploration of new avenues of diffusion.

Author Paule Mackrous follows up with Le web est ailleurs ! (The Web is Elsewhere!), a text that attempts to answer the question: What will become of hypermedia creation now that everyone has access to web tools? Her reflection is structured around four lines of thought that enable an analysis of Agence TOPO's programming: interactivity, a confrontation; remixing, a relocation; connecting through the imagination; and establishing a presence for web art.

Over the past few years, the TOPO Agency has devised creative strategies for presenting and supporting interdisciplinary works. Web art can literally leap off the screen and become an event, a performance, or even a process of anchoring itself in the world. As this publication rightly points out, the latest cycle of works supported and distributed by Agence TOPO has taken on the challenge of deepening the interactive relationship between the public and hypermedia works. In doing so, we proudly reaffirm the specificity of our mission: to produce, disseminate, and distribute digital artworks that explore new forms of narrative and interdisciplinary and intercultural intersections.
